Thanks to Dolly Parton, my son has received a new storybook in the mail every month of his little life since he was born. While he looks forward to and enjoys reading every single book, there are a select few that become fast favorites. These books always seem to be at the top of the stack, begging to be read again and again. That’s certainly the case for a little green book entitled, “A House is a House for Me” by Mary Ann Hoberman.

As a single mother, it has always been my dream to provide my son with a house, a yard, and a room of his own. So, while he loves the book for the rhymes and the whimsy — a throat is a house for a hum! — I love it because it’s a constant reminder of my dream to own my own home. It sounds silly, but reading that book every night has kept me motivated to pay off my debt and save for a downpayment.

Today, I was pre-approved for a mortgage. My budget is modest, and I have a long way to go before I am officially a homeowner. But I could not be more excited to be well on my way to reading that well-loved book to my son in a house of our very own.
